Germs & Growth Inside Your AC

Is Your AC Spreading What’s Growing Inside It?

South Florida’s year-round humidity makes your AC the busiest air filter, dehumidifier and mold-control system in your house — whether it’s equipped for the job or not.

2 · GERMS & GROWTH

Viruses, bacteria, mold and mildew breeding inside the system.

Your System

“Dirty sock” smell, growth on coils and pans, spread to every room.

Your Family

Respiratory, throat & ear infections, sinusitis.

Sound familiar?

  • Musty smell when the AC first kicks on
  • One cold loops through the whole family
  • Black flecks on vent covers or closet ceiling
  • Sore throat or itchy eyes that start at home
  • Allergy meds don’t seem to work in the house
  • Asthma, newborns or grandparents under your roof

Indoor air is often 2–5× more polluted than outdoor air.

— U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

The fix for germs and growth is germicidal UV-C light mounted at the source — your coil. That’s PureBreathe™.

How PureBreathe™ Stops Mold and Bacteria Before They Reach Your Family

High-output Dual-Radiant™ UV-C lamps mount inside your ductwork and bathe the coil and passing air in germicidal light — the same technology hospitals rely on.

1

Mounted at the Source

High-output UV-C lamps install directly inside your air handler, aimed at the evaporator coil — the #1 spot where mold and bacteria colonize in Florida’s humidity.

2

24/7 Germicidal Output

The lamps emit 180 μW/cm² of UV-C energy — 330% stronger than standard UV lamps. Running continuously, they help neutralize mold, bacteria, and virus particles on the coil and in the passing airstream.

3

Cleaner Air, Every Room

The air that reaches your vents has passed through the germicidal zone. Result: fresher air, a visibly cleaner coil, lower energy bills from reduced buildup, and longer equipment life.

Pairs with the ElectraGuard™ Filter — the filter catches particles, the UV handles the living stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About PureBreathe™ UV

How does UV-C light actually kill mold and bacteria?
UV-C light (germicidal ultraviolet) disrupts the DNA of microorganisms — viruses, bacteria, and mold spores — preventing them from reproducing. At the 180 µW/cm² output of PureBreathe's RM1-16, the lamps deliver enough energy to neutralize biological contaminants on the evaporator coil and in the airstream. This is the same technology hospitals use to sanitize operating rooms, applied continuously inside your AC system.
Will I notice a difference after installation?
Most homeowners notice fresher air — that "dirty sock" or musty smell when the AC kicks on is typically gone within a few days. Allergy and asthma sufferers often report fewer symptoms. Over time, you may see lower energy bills because a UV-clean coil transfers heat more efficiently with less biological buildup. Results vary by home and existing contamination level.
How often do the lamps need replacing, and who tracks it?
PureBreathe UV lamps are rated for 27,000 hours — approximately 3 years of continuous operation. Hales tracks your lamp's age and flags it during your annual or semi-annual tune-up so you never have to remember. Comfort Club members save 20% on replacement lamps as well as the original installation.
Which tier is right for my home?
Most Tampa Bay homes (under 2,500 sq ft, single-zone systems) are well-served by the Better (RM1-16) — our most-chosen tier. Larger homes or dual-zone systems benefit from the Best (RM2-16/16) dual-lamp coverage. The Ultimate (RM3-16/16/5) is for homes with persistent odor issues — pet smells, cooking, or musty VOCs — because only the Ultimate tier includes a UVV oxidation lamp that destroys odors chemically. The Good (UV Remote Eco) is the right call when budget is the primary constraint and the system is under 5 tons. Your Hales technician will measure your coil and recommend the right fit during the visit.
Can PureBreathe™ UV be installed on the same visit as other work?
Yes — and that's the most efficient way to do it. UV installation takes under an hour and doesn't require shutting down the system for more than a short period. If a technician is already at your home for a tune-up, repair, or ElectraGuard™ filter installation, adding PureBreathe UV on the same visit saves you a service call.
Is this safe? Does UV-C light come out of the vents?
UV-C light is harmful to eyes and skin with direct exposure — which is precisely why it's effective against microorganisms. PureBreathe UV lamps are fully enclosed inside the air handler. No UV-C light escapes into your living space through the vents; only treated air passes through. The system runs safely 24/7 without any precautions needed by occupants.
